The Jolly Rancher Lollypops

It was the best day of the year- my birthday. I was superlatively excited to distribute Jolly Rancher lollipops to my classmates and teachers. We had to visit a number of stores to get the desired type and number of these lollipops as they are not readily available. I was eagerly waiting for my friends to wish me over and over. The whole class would sing for me and I would be the star of the day.

Also, today I was going to reach the class well in time, contrary to my usual tardiness. Today was different, I had reached school 15 minutes early than the normal time of 7.30 am. On way to my class, I met my friend on the staircase and she suggested we take the elevator. In excitement, I forgot to tell the liftman for the fourth floor. And accidentally reached the sixth floor.

The Sixth floor had classes of higher grades. Their school starts at 7.00 am so for them, I was 15 minutes late. Latecomers were being scolded harshly by Man Singh Sir.  I recalled our principal’s announcement of strict actions on the latecomers. I panicked fearing that sir could mistakenly scold us. My friend suggested climbing down two floors and quickly ran towards the stairs. But, I simply stood there panic-stricken. I did not feel a thing as Sir’s deadly grip clotted my blood. I was paralyzed, to my misfortune, my mouth refused to open, tongue too tied and terrorized to speak.

Sir dragged me into the scolding section, and I joined the doomed ones. There was a lecture of half an hour on punctuality. By this time, I was 15 minutes late for my own class already. My excitement had faded off. Eventually, as he gave the order of our dispersal I rushed towards my class. It was then that I realized that I had forgotten my lollypops at home. Everything around me that was moving with time, stopped. I stood rooted to the ground regretting my silliness. Could this day get any worse?

I heard my mom's voice, “Get up Fionaa, get up” she continued, “or you will be late to your school”. I woke up to find myself not on the school stairs but my home bed. I was never so delighted to wake up this early. I always demanded two more minutes of this heart-warming means of relaxation. But for today, losing the nightmare where it was, was the best thing. I quickly got up and ensured all the Jolly Rancher lollypops were in my bag.

My teacher today

Veeir Bhaiya had won a state-level cricket tournament by hitting the last winning shot. Alishha and I wrote a poem for him. Reteka Masi and Vishaal masosa got highly impressed by our poem. Vishaal masosa even expressed his wish for us to write a poem on him. Alishha and I were excited and pleasingly agreed to do so. Within a couple of hours of his request, we accomplished that task. Nana immediately whatsapped him too. As he read that poem he was overjoyed and called us. He was overwhelmed to see our vocabulary, accuracy, and promptness. He was literally in tears of happiness. He wanted to reward us for writing two poems in such a small span of time. He offered to take us out for dinner. We pleasingly agreed to that. 😊At the dinner, he continued praising us. Many times he even asked us to teach him writing poetry. which made us laugh and giggle. We thought he was joking as how could we teach him; we were too young.

Later, while coming back home I recalled a chapter from Sudha Murty’s book, titled, “How I taught my grandmother to read”. Sudha was a young girl. She and her grandmother (Amma) used to love reading a Kannada magazine series which came every fortnight. Her grandmother did not know how to read as she had not gone to school. Therefore, Sudha would read it and her grandmother would listen carefully. Once Sudha had to go for a marriage party with her parents. The magazine came as usual in time. Sudha ‘s grandmother tried to read it in the absence of Sudha but couldn’t understand a single alphabet. When Sudha came back, she found her grandmother sobbing. Amma desperately wanted to become literate and independent for reading. Sudha just laughed at Amma’s thought. She said Amma was too old to be taught and she was too young to teach. Then Amma explained to her that no teacher should be discriminated on the basis of age and that is what their God has taught them. Eventually, Sudha taught her, and in just ten days Amma was able to read.

This story made me ponder. I started analyzing my thoughts and Sudha’s dialogues to her Amma. We were having similar stereotypes. Masosa might be as keen as Amma to learn. When he asked us to teach, we giggled as we were feeling embarrassed. Vishal masosa, one who has traveled half of the countries in the world, has met so many knowledgeable people across the globe and who is embedded with uncountable talents, was asking us to teach him. We are just some 11 and 8-year old, who write poems in Heart club gleefully. We had never imagined that we would be given this opportunity to teach such an accomplished person. But the fact is that Masosa has taught me something today: Firstly, for a student only one quality is essential- that is the urge to learn. Secondly, there is no age for being a teacher; anyone with talent can be your teacher!

My dear Alishha

We live apart and so far away,
After years we get to meet for a day,
That is the most emotional part,
As our patience in the craze is an art!

My bright companion of Heart club,
Giving great support and positivity
Helping me write prose and poetry,
The only one who never takes it lightly!

You must never underestimate her,
For she is a bold and beautiful sister!
Can’t be compared with anybody,
Who is ever and always praiseworthy!

She is so incredibly intelligent,
Just surpasses everyone easily!
Always an allrounder and topper,
Beating the world un-comparably.

A place in my heart is what she holds,
We share fond memories and some scolds!
We are the sisters who live amicably,
Enjoying the Heart Club remarkably!

Voice of Rakhi

Quilling Rakhi made by Fionaa

Crafted and decorated with perfection,
Prepared with love and affection!
Every year tied by her, on his hand,
With the silk thread, Rakhi I stand!

She buys me thinking of the future,
For the brother protecting his sister!
She is sure that his care would remain,
Unaffected by his financial loss or gain!

But that is the story of olden times,
When there were black &white Chimes!
Now is the age for women empowerment,
To realize a girl’s potential that God sent!

Amazed to see a world out of Thali,
Women venture everywhere freely!
Can tie me to anyone; for you- who fight,
Brother, sister, or mother, full of might!

My First Family trip to Europe

We went to Europe for a Family trip
Ate pizza daily had cola for the sip!

The drive to Delhi churned my stomach,
Didn’t know the reaching time or luck!

At Ukraine airport, kid zone was the charm,
Until there was a big fighting alarm!

Reaching Frankfurt filled us with excitement,
Lovely weather filled with European scent!

Magnificent Mercedes Museum startled us
Awing at car models, no one did hunger fuss!

Amazing food by Tharesh uncle and Swati aunty,
Minion smileys with the mouthwatering delicacy!

Where we all had lip-smacking ice-cream,
Was the Lake Titisee-  scenic like a lovely dream!

The Heidelberg castle left us in amazement,
Even though the guide blabbered in his accent!

Daddy's super idea of the spacious bus,
Giving the feel of home comforted all of us!

Spyer Museum was ancient and educational,
Apollo-11 movie was informative and enjoyable.

Mesmerizing was the Schanz Windmills,
Beautiful lake, houses, and windy Hills!

Madurodam had miniatures perfectly detailed,
There wasn’t a game, that we hadn’t nailed.

Seagull on the beach took Ayussh’s pizza
At Scheveningen without any struggle of visa!

Spell bounding was the Brussels city square,
Belgium Chocolates and yummy Waffles everywhere!

Mini Europe made all of us speechless,
Realized knowledge about Europe, is always less!

Every Roller coaster at Disney was thrilling
Loved it, even when our heads were spinning!

Saw Eiffel Tower- the world wonder,
Where people don’t leave even in thunder!

All this only Nani made it possible,
Can’t be compared, she is incredible!

What words shall I use to thank her,
The way she carried food and water!

Her vision of Family trip to Europe,
was beyond our expectations and hope!

Rain Prayer

O Father, the Lord of Goodwill
Min land is barren and thirsty
Art dying waterless, grant rain timely
Shall thee drench Earth with water
Shall thee save us from this slaughter
Sun, the bee, shall leave on its own
But you are helpful enough, to be praised and known
Amen!

The German Visa

A few days ago I and my family went to the Visa office. I was overwhelmed to know that we were going to have a new experience. How my excitement turned to interest with hidden sympathy is a whole lot of adventure you are going to read.

When we slithered inside the office there was a mass of people who seemed extremely annoyed. They were disgusted by the inconvenience of the service in the office. They were also trying to adjust in an inadequate number of seats. I pitied them. Then I had to pity ourselves as we didn't have seats for ourselves and it was taking too long.

There was an excellent door security system. The door only opened when the tiny machines beside every door scanned the staff's ID cards. This staff looked cool even though a lot of people yelling at them. From inside they were little depressed, but they hid their depression pretty well.

Some of the complaining customers happened to lighten their miseries by sharing it. A woman told that she and her husband were there from the previous afternoon. After waiting till 5.00 in the evening, they were told that the server stopped responding. Then, they had to take another token for the next day to be in the queue. Another lady had searched several cities for her passport and the company employees seemed to be playing passing the parcel with it.

My dad had gone to keep mom's laptop in the car as they did not allow it inside. Then he secretly drove off to the McDonalds for giving us a surprise. People who had not even gotten their tokens were standing in the line. When daddy came back, he sorted the people. He was the savior and always is. After that everything seemed to went well. But a while later, शान्ति  became अशान्ति.

Then I had gone to my nani's home. After some time, I was called to get another photo for the visa application. This is when I realized that Germans do not like people who smile with teeth showing. They want us to listen to them so they want to see out full ears in the visa application fee. I was made to click photos 3 times in an hour.

In conclusion, the experience at the Visa office gave me two ultimate lessons:
1. When getting a photo clicked for a German visa, remember their rules.
2. There is always more than what meets the eye. First I thought the problem was in the staff of that office. But actually, the documents of the shrieking people were not complete. They were probably shouting as they wanted to hide their mistakes and blame the staff.

Don’t judge people quickly

Puja ma’am was very short tempered and the strictest teacher aboard our bus. Children used to avoid her and hated to sit even two seats near her.  No one liked her until yesterday.

It was a usual afternoon when our bus was stuck in the B2Bypass traffic. Suddenly we bumped into an alto’s rear mirror. It was an accident. Two affected people jumped into our bus and started arguing with the driver to pay the compensation. All of us were clueless about what would happen. Would we be able to escape from paying the fine? Would we live in Jail from today? Or would our parents need to be invited to confront this? Everyone wanted to reach home as they were troubled by the scorching heat.  All teachers seemed to enjoy meekly the arguments between strangers and the driver, but Puja ma’am.

Puja ma’am listened patiently to extreme abuses, given by the unwanted guests. She stood up on our bus driver’s side and her courage and bravery were exemplary. She told them that by one call she could bring fifty police officers in a minute as many of her family members were government officers. It doesn’t matter if that warning was real or fake. She gave them her phone number and asked them to leave. They finally understood and left. We got dropped at our homes. All that mattered at that time was an adorable lady who saved us even when it was not her duty.

I realized that judging someone from her outside behavior without much knowledge may lead to misjudgment.

Little incidents teach important life values.  This incident changed my perspective on my teacher. It is just like looking at the other side of the story. Now I have raised a level of respect in my mind for her. My heart is full of flowers for her. I look up to  her for inspiration

Advice to a Thief

Dear Thief,

If you stop stealing and make
your heart bigger than an elephant,
If you love your own home,
you will realize the treasure God sent!

If you would be happy and satisfied,
You’ll find some eggs in your nest!
If you don’t steal sparkly things,
Even then your home would be the best!

If you can always stop yourself
From committing the deadly sins,
If you keep the goodness, you will be
The richest, having put hatred in bins!
